Oysters are also produced with farming techniques.

Clams and Oysters

These are two kinds of molluscs. These are invertebrate animals protected either by one or two shells or by having a form of shell within their bodies. Clams and oysters are kivalve molluscs, they have two shells hinged together at one end. Some clams are very big. The giant clam which lives in Australian waters has a shell four feet across.

Oysters and most clams live in the sea, and eat by straining tiny organisms out of the water. A clam has a foot, a fleshy organ that protrudes from the shell. Clams often use the foot to burrow in soft mud or sand. An oyster does not possess a foot. When young, it attaches itself permanently to the sea bed by cementing one shell to a rock.

The fleshy bodies of clams and oysters are good to eat. Clam chowder is a tasty thick soup made from clams. Clams and oysters are often eaten raw, straight from the shells. Smoked oysters are a delicacy. Most clams and oysters eaten in America come from the Atlantic coast. Many oysters are raised on 'farms' in coastal waters. Oyster farmers use special areas of the sea bed to rear oysters.
