Delhi
Delhi is the capital city of India. It is situated within the Union Territory of Delhi on the Jamuna river. It consists of two parts. Old Delhi is an ancient walled city rich in monuments of the great Mogul rulers. New Delhi, founded in 1912 when the seat of government was transferred from Calcutta, is a well-planned city with modern buildings and broad tree-lined avenues. In addition to its administrative function it is an important trade center. The Red Fort of Emperor Shah Jahan, with marble pavilions and splendid inlaid work, was once the most magnificent palace in the East.
