India is among the largest democracy ruled countries.

Democracy

Most people prefer a government in which they have a voice and can choose their leaders. Such a government is called a democracy, from the Greek words for 'rule of the people'. A great American president, Abraham Lincoln, asked his fellow citizens to ensure "that government of the people, by the people, and for the people, shall not perish from the earth." This is the ideal description of democracy. But democracy is a difficult form of government and it can be inefficient. A democracy may prove weak when attacked, as was France in 1940. A democracy may not be able to concentrate on developing its wealth. India, a democracy, has been less efficient in industrializing than Communist countries.

Regular elections with a choice of candidates from more than one party are a feature of democratic government. The republican form of government in the United States is democratic. Constitutional monarchies, such as Britain, are also democratic, because the monarch is head of state and power is in the hands of an elected parliament. In all democracies, people can vote out of office people, with whom they disagree, replacing them with others from another party. This cannot happen in one-party states.

One-party states are not always dictatorships, however. If there is some freedom of speech and there are powerful organizations like trade unions or churches, the government can be criticized and may alter its policies. This was happening in Communist Czechoslovakia in 1968 when the Soviet army invaded the country to prevent democratic changes.
