Denver is the capital and largest city of Colorado. Denver is a leading financial, distribution and transportation center for the surrounding Rocky Mountain states. It has a huge stockyard, and large cattle and sheep markets. Meat packing, grain milling and food processing are among the chief industries. Important products include electrical equipment, luggage and rubber goods.
An important government mint is located in Denver. Lowry Air Force Base and the Air Force Academy are nearby, and the city has many government offices. Thousands of tourists are attracted by the pleasant climate and the nearby Rockies. Denver has several museums and an outside theater for musical events, which holds 10,000 people.
Denver was founded during the gold rush days. Later on, the discovery of silver brought new wealth. In the 1890's the production of silver slowed down. Since that time, farming and commerce have been the major industries.
