Detroit

Detroit is the largest city in Michigan and one of the most important automobile manufacturing centers in the world. About a third of the automobiles in the United States are made in the Detroit area. The city lies along the Detroit River. It has access to the Great Lakes and the St Lawrence Seaway and is one of the busiest inland ports in the world.

DetroitThe city itself, without suburbs, has a population of more than 1,493,000. Many people are of Austrian, French, German, Hungarian, Irish, Polish or Russian descent. About a quarter of the population is black. About a third of Detroit's people are occupied in automobile manufacturing. Aside from automobiles, Detroit produces steel, soap, paints, chemicals, business machines and glass. The city has many museums, including the Detroit Institute of Arts, a fine symphony orchestra and several universities. The city of Dearborn near Detroit has the Henry Ford Museum, which specializes in industrial history.

The original settlement on the site of Detroit was established in 1701 by the French adventurer and soldier, Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac. It was then a military and fur trading post. The settlement came under American control in 1796. Detroit was made the seat of the Michigan government in 1805, when the Michigan territory was organized. In that same year, the settlement was destroyed by a fire. The city was completely rebuilt, and grew rapidly after the Erie Canal was completed in the 1820's. However, the capital of Michigan was moved to Lansing in 1847. Detroit is close to the Canadian border and so, before the Civil War, it was an outlet for the underground railroad, through which slaves escaped to Canada.

In 1899, the first automobile manufacturing plant was built in Detroit, and the city soon became the 'Motor Capital of the World.' Ford, General Motors, Chrysler and American Motors have plants in the Detroit area. Detroit is now connected with Windsor, Ontario, Canada by a bridge and two tunnels.
