Diamonds
Diamonds are the most prized of gem-stones, valued for their rarity and their brilliance. It is a crystallized form of the mineral carbon, formed by great heat and pressure under the surface of the Earth. It is the hardest natural substance.
The flash and sparkle of diamonds comes after they have been cut by skilled diamond cutters. The most valuable diamonds are colorless. Any color in diamonds is caused by the presence of slight impurities. Because diamonds are so hard, they are valuable in industry. They are used in all kinds of cutting drills. Today artificial diamonds are used in industry.
South Africa mines most of the best quality diamonds, but Congo (Kinshasa) produces large quantities of industrial diamonds. The world's largest diamond was the Cullinan, which was found in South Africa in 1905. It weighed Is 1 1/3 Ibs before being cut.
