Dominican Republic
This country occupies the larger part of the island of Hispaniola, in the West Indies. To the north is the Atlantic Ocean, to the south is the Caribbean Sea It has an area of 18,704 square miles and a population of more than 4,320,000. Its capital is Ciudad Trujillo. Chief crops include sugar, tobacco, coffee and cocoa.
Dominican was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492, the Dominican Republic was under Spanish and Haitian rule until 1844 when it became independent. In 1965 President Lyndon Johnson sent U.S. troops into the Dominican Republic to prevent what he believed would be a Communist takeover of the government.
