Eel
This is a long, thin, snake-like fish. There are more than 350 species of eels, varying in size from five inches up to nine feet. Fresh-water eels, up to three feet long, are found in the streams of Western Europe and eastern North America. The adult eels leave their streams to breed at great depths near the Sargasso Sea, in the Atlantic Ocean. The parents die, and the small, transparent eel larvae drift towards the coasts. It takes them over a year to find their way to American streams, and three years to Europe. Before they reach the coast, the larvae change into elvers, small eels about three inches long. The females then migrate far inland, but the males stay in rivers near the coast. The eels spend 7 to 15 years inland before migrating back to the Sargasso Sea to spawn (breed) and die.
Salt-water eels include the Moray eels of shallow tropical waters. They are often speckled with bright colors, and are fierce and dangerous. Conger eels are the largest eels - they are found in shallow waters off the coasts of western Europe.
