Short Info

The principle of electroplating. When a block of copper and an object such as a key are dipped in a solution of copper sulphate and a current passes between them, copper is gradually deposited on the key.

Electroplating

electroplatingThis is a process whereby decorative or protective metallic coats are deposited on objects by placing them in a chemical bath through which an electric current is flowing. Objects such as teapots, candlesticks, etc., made from a base material can be made to look very attractive by depositing a thin layer of silver on them. This is the process known as silver plating. Parts of automobiles are protected by plating them with copper or nickel, and the appearance of many automobiles is improved by coating exterior metal work with chromium.

Chromium plating is widely used to coat steel and gives a lasting, shiny finish. A hard layer of chromium protects a thicker layer of nickel underneath from scratches. Steel is also plated with tin to form tinplate, and with zinc to form galvanized steel. Silver plating is widely used to plate cutlery.

A direct current flows through a plating bath containing a solution of the metal to be deposited. The negative side of the supply is connected to the object, which is immersed in the bath. The positive side of the supply is connected to a bar which, like the bath itself, is made from the metal to be deposited. This bar too is immersed in the bath. When the direct current supply is switched on, the metal atoms in the solution, which are positively charged, are attracted by the object because it is negative, and drift towards it. When they reach it they firmly adhere to it.
