In 1947 the Everglade National park was established.

Everglades National Park

Everglades National Park is a subtropical park in the United States National Park System. The 1,500,000 acre park is located on the southernmost tip of Florida. This remote area was one of the last parts of the United States to be explored, mapped and made known to the public. The park was not established until 1947.

The land area of the park consists of saw grass prairies, pine forests and mangrove forests. The western half of the park is a swampy maze of interconnecting waterways. Florida Bay, with its many small islands, or keys, also falls within the park's boundaries. Alligators, American crocodiles and manatees or sea cows are some of the park's more spectacular water animals. Mountain lions, otters, raccoons, and many other land animals are present but are seldom seen. Thousands of wading birds provide one of the most striking attractions.
