Fables
Fables are very short tales which contain some moral teaching. The characters are usually animals, but men may also take part in the action. Aesop's Fables are the earliest and best known. Aesop was a slave in Samos (a Greek island) in the 6th century B.C., who was famed as a storyteller. After his death, collections of his stories were made. And because of his fame, he was credited with the authorship of a great many fables whose real authors were unknown.
The characters of fable are familiar to many people. Animals like the lazy grasshopper and the industrious ant show us the dangers of idleness and thoughtlessness, and the importance of hard work and common sense.
