Fairs

Fairs are places where people congregate for purposes of entertainment or trade. Carnivals (called fun fairs in Britain and parts of Europe) usually have merry-go-rounds, swings, side-shows and games. Trade fairs display products to the public or to trade buyers.

Fairs have been held since ancient times. They were usually occasions when goods were exchanged. For example, the Aztecs held regular fairs when goods were traded before the arrival of Hernando Cortes and the Spanish conquerors.

During the 1800's and 1900's, world fairs or expositions (formerly referred to as exhibitions), became important. The Crystal Palace exhibition in London in 1851 was a tribute to British technical progress. It was followed by the New York Crystal Palace exhibition of 1853-4 and the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, which honored Alexander Graham Bell and the invention of the telephone.

In   the   1900's, world fairs attracted millions of visitors. They included the Seattle World Fair of 1958, the New York World's Fair of 1964-5, Expo 67, which was held at Montreal in 1967, and Expo 70, which was held at Osaka, Japan in 1970. The theme of Expo 70 was Progress and Harmony for Mankind.
