Guinea
Guinea is an independent republic facing the Atlantic Ocean in West Africa. With an area of 94,926 square miles, Guinea is bordered by Portuguese Guinea, Senegal and Mali (north), Ivory Coast (east) and Sierra Leone and Liberia (south). The climate ranges from tropical heat on the coast to cooler on the inland plateau. Conakry is Guinea's capital and largest city. Most of Guinea's 3,987,000 people are farmers. The main export crops are bananas and pineapples. Guinea has rich deposits of iron, diamonds and bauxite. Formerly a French territory, Guinea became independent in 1958.
