Hail
Hail consists of ice pellets that fall to earth during thunderstorms. Droplets of water are carried up and down the freezing levels of clouds by strong air currents. They take on fresh layers of ice until they fall as hailstones. Hailstones range in size from a fifth of an inch to two inches or more in diameter. The heaviest hailstone recorded fell in Nebraska in 1928. It was 5 inches across and weighed P/2 pounds.
