Hamilton Alexander

Hamilton, Alexander (1755?-1804) was one of the leaders of the American Revolution. He believed that the Federal (national) government should be much stronger than the state governments. Hamilton was responsible for calling the constitutional convention in 1787, when the constitution was drafted. In The Federalist - a series of essays written with James Madison, he explained the importance of the constitution. When Washington became president in 1789, Hamilton became Secretary of the Treasury. He was also leader of the Federalist Party. Hamilton made the federal government take over state debts and established the Bank of the United States.

Hamilton came to America from Nevis in the West Indies, where he was born. He served as secretary to George Washington in the Revolutionary War and fought at Yorktown in 1781. Afterwards he became a leading New York lawyer. Hamilton disagreed with the political ideas of Thomas Jefferson, who formed the Democratic-Republican Party. However, in 1800 Hamilton supported Jefferson for the presidency because he distrusted Aaron Burr, the other leading candidate. When Hamilton prevented Burr from becoming governor of New York in 1804, Burr challenged him to a duel. Hamilton accepted and was killed.
