Herbivores
Herbivores are animals which eat mainly plant food rather than meat. The two main groups of herbivorous mammals are rodents (gnawing animals like mice and squirrels) and ungulates (hoofed animals). Ungulates include elephants, rhinos, hippos, horses and antelopes. They also include ruminants, such as sheep, goats and cattle. These have stomachs divided into four sections.
Food is swallowed into the first section, the rumen, where bacteria help to break down the plant tissues. The food is then passed back to the mouth and chewed again - this is called 'chewing the cud' before it goes to the other parts of the stomach.
