The climate varies in Iraq from extreme, humid heat in the summer in the south to the cold winter nights of the northern mountains. The average annual rainfall varies from 7 to 11 inches in the plain. Most of Iraq’s people are farmers who work near the great Tigris and Euphrates rivers. These two rivers flow south- eastwards through Iraq into the Persian Gulf. They and their tributaries provide water for irrigating the otherwise dry farmland.
A small proportion of Iraqis are nomads who wander through the desert with herds of animals which provide food and clothing. Iraq’s main product and export is petroleum, which has been found in many places in the country.

Most Iraqis are Arabs who practice the Islamic religion. Iraq has been the home of many great civilizations, including the Sumerian, Assyrian and Babylonian. From A.D. 762 to 1258, Baghdad, then under Persian control, became the cultural center of the Muslim world. In the early 1600’s, Iraq became part of the Turkish Ottoman Empire.

The British took Iraq from the Turks during the First World War (1914-18), Iraq established a monarchy under King Faisal I in 1921, but British influence remained until after 1945. In 1958, the monarchy was overthrown and General Kassem became ruler. In 1963, he was assassinated. Iraq then came under military rule.
