Istanbul

Istanbul is the largest city and an important seaport of Turkey. It lies on the western or European shore of the Bosphorus, close to the Sea of Marmara. Under the name Constantinople, it was the former capital. But the seat of government is now Ankara. Istanbul still remains a commercial, educational, and cultural center. It has sugar and cotton depots and a host of light industries. There are two universities.
The Golden Horn is an inlet from the Bosphorus which forms a natural harbor and cuts the city into two parts. The southern portion or Istanbul proper was founded and named Constantinople by Constantine the Great in 330 and stands on the site of the ancient Greek city of Byzantium. The Church of St Sophia is a monument to this period. It was erected by Constantine and rebuilt by Justinian the Great in 537. It was later converted to a mosque and adorned with golden mosaics. Today it is a museum displaying Byzantine and Turkish works of art.
