Jordon

Jordan, a monarchy in southwestern Asia, covers 37,301 square miles. Part of the country west of the Jordan River, came under Israeli occupation after the Arab-Israeli war of 1967. Jordan s capital is Amman. Most of Jordan's people are Arabic-speaking Muslims. Many of them belong to families that lived in Palestine before 1948.
Most of Jordan is a sandy desert. The burning heat of the summer days contrasts with the icy cold of winter nights in mountain districts. More than half of Jordan's people are farmers, and land suitable for agriculture is well cultivated. Jordan's mineral resources include bromine, manganese, phosphates and potash.
Jordan, which has some of the world's oldest towns, was conquered by the Romans nearly 2,000 years ago. Later then came the Arabs, who were conquered by the Turks. The British took Jordan in World War I, but the country became independent in 1946. Two years later, Israel came into existence. Fighting has occurred between the two countries, each disputing the others borders.
