Date Palm
This is a tree that produces small, brown, sticky fruits called dates. Date palms grow in hot, dry tropical countries, particularly in the Middle East and northern Africa. The world’s leading date-producing country is Iraq.
Date palms grow to a height of up to 100 feet. The leaves that fan out from the top of the trunk can be used to make rope, mats and baskets. The trunk itself can be used as fuel and as wood for building. The fruit is borne in large clusters at the top of the trunk. It develops from flowers. Only female palms produce the fruit. Male palm produce pollen that fertilizers the flowers on the female palms.
When the fruit is ripe, it is often harvested by a man shinning up the tree, secured only by a rope passing around his waist and the tree trunk. One palm tree may yield up to 200 pounds of dates. The dates can be eaten fresh or dried, or they can be cooked or allowed to ferment.
