Indoor Plants
Indoor Plants are those plants grown indoors for decoration and display. Until early 1900’s, the only plant found in the vast majority of homes was the aspidistra. Today the picture is quite different, and an array of quite unrelated species adorn many homes.
House plants can be grown for their leaves or for their flowers. The rubber plant has become a popular house plant. It has thick, shiny dark-green leaves. The rubber plant’s natural home is the tropical forest, so it needs protection from full sunlight and from drafts.
Ornamental ivy, coleus, and philodendron are grown for their attractive leaves. Hyacinths and dwarf azaleas are priced for their beautiful blooms. If you plan to grow house plants, keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, and water less during winter.
Some house or indoor plants need to have their leaves sponged occasionally with water to remove dirt which may gather on them. This can be a fascinating hobby for the entire family. There are many books written on how to grow indoor plants and information for identifying house plants.
