El Salvador
El Salvador. This is Latin America's smallest republic. It has an area of 8,260 square miles and a population of more than 3,472,000. El Salvador lies in Central America. Fertile valleys lie between two east-west lines of volcanoes. The climate is warm and tropical. Most of the people are mestizos (of mixed Indian and European descent). Their main occupation is farming. Leading crops are coffee, corn and cotton. Cotton textiles are the chief industry. San Salvador is the capital.
