Short Information

The hedgehog rolls itself into a ball when threatened and relies on its spines to protect it from attack. Despite its resemblance to a porcupine it is not related.

Hedgehog

The hedgehog is a small animal whose back is covered in sharp spines, much like a porcupine's. But hedgehogs are not related to porcupines, and their spines are closer and shorter. When a hedgehog is in danger, it rolls itself up into a ball, so that its spines protect it.

Hedgehogs live in Africa, Asia and Europe. A fully grown hedgehog is only about nine inches long. It has a pointed snout and a small mouth. It is classed as an insectivore (insect-eater), but it will also eat other small animals, such as worms and birds' eggs. In cool regions, hedgehogs hibernate in winter.
